Soul Stew Revival - Bonnaroo 2008 | MP3s

Just go here, fire up your bittorrent client and download the show. Don’t think, just do it. I know I know, two posts in one day, the world must be coming to an end. I had to add this quickly because I’m listening to it now and I’m totally floored. I’ve seen Derek Trucks w/ Susan twice now - neither time was a full-on Soul Stew Revival show - Susan just happened to be there. But this makes me want to catch the entire crew live sooo badly. So while you’re downloading the lossless version, here are some MP3s to tide you over.

Was anyone at this set @ Bonnaroo this year?

I’m kinda sure they also played I’d Rather Be Blind, Crippled & Crazy, but to tell you the truth my memory is a bit hazy (it was like a NORML chapter meeting). I’m emailing someone else who was also in attendance (hi Andrew) to confirm. Update: They didn’t play it, according to Andrew. I trust his memory of the show more than mine. Update 2: They DID play it, I KNEW it. I got confirmation from someone else.

Of the two nights (I saw them in Victoria, BC on the 23rd) - Vancouver was the winner. Don’t get me wrong, Victoria was fantastic, but Vancouver was just retarded. It might have had something to do w/ not being able to stand up in Victoria. It was a seated theatre - the kind where you’d get “sit down!!” yelled at you if you stood, and Vancouver was GA/standing. That and I was front row, dead center. At times, 3 feet from Derek himself. I arrived 2 hours before the doors opened and was 2nd in line. My bud Andrew arrived 15 min before the doors opened, and stood next to me in the front. Oh well, I brought a book, and had fun talking to the folks in line.

Though this was not a Soul Stew Revival show (nor was Victoria), Susan and Duane played at both shows (Ron Holloway didn’t play at either). I didn’t see any tapers at either show, but that doesn’t mean much.. I hope.. (see “huge amazing fantastic update” above - sometimes wishes do come true!)

Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi - Soul Stew Revival 6/15/07

Only 4 days until I see Derek Trucks in Victoria. The next day I hop on a ferry and head back to Vancouver, where I’ll see him again. Two days, two Derek shows. Sadly they’re not part of the Soul Stew Revival tour (like the MP3s below) - it’s “just” regular old Derek Trucks Band shows. But I’m optimistic that Susan will make an appearance or two - she played the Vancouver Folk Festival last year, so maybe she remembers how beautiful it is out here.

Also, if I time my ferry trip right, I could wind up on the same boat as the DTB. I can’t see them flying from Vic to Van (though I guess it’s possible). I’m not much of a celebrity-stalker, but I’d sure like to shake Dereks hand and tell him how much I appreciate what he does.

BTW if you happen to be going to the Van show, I’ll be the moron near first in line @ the Commodore, and then in the front row for the duration of the show.

Mule Monday: 04/11/1996

This week I’ve decided to post some ‘older’ Gov’t Mule tracks, from way back in ‘96. The location was the Georgia Theater, in Athens, GA. It’s also worth noting that these were created from a soundboard source, rather than an audience rig (mule tapers rule!). If you like what you hear, I’d strongly suggest grabbing the lossless version on etree while it’s still being seeded.

One last thing - Derek Trucks sits in for Gonna Send You Back To Georgia - and he was only sixteen years old at the time.

Gov’t Mule - St. Stephen Jam
Gov’t Mule - Presence Of The Lord
Gov’t Mule - Goin’ Out West
Gov’t Mule w/ Derek Trucks - Gonna Send You Back To Georgia

The 2007 Vancouver Jazz Festival initial lineup

There are just too many bands/artists to name (full list here), so I’ll point out some of the acts I plan on seeing.

Sonny Rollins - June 22, 2007 @ The Orpheum Theatre
The Derek Trucks Band - June 24, 2007 @ The Commodore
M. Ward - June 28, 2007 @ The Orpheum Theatre
Norah Jones and the Handsome Band - June 28, 2007 @ The Orpheum Theatre
The Blind Boys of Alabama - June 30, 2007 @ Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts

I would have included Antibalas (June 23, 2007 @ Commodore Ballroom) in that list, but The Derek Trucks Band is playing in Victoria that same night, and Derek wins over just about everyone else.

Goofy little side-note: as I was writing that last paragraph, it dawned on me that tickets had probably also just gone on sale for the shows (I’m a little slow sometimes…) so I paused, went to Ticketbastard and purchased myself some Derek Trucks tickets. I’ll be in Row C seat 24 in Victoria, and right at the front of the (GA) stage in Vancouver. A.W.E.S.O.M.E.

Out of the Madness

The Derek Trucks Bands’ (Band’s? Bands?) NYE show has appeared on etree for those of you who are bittorrent inclined. If you’re not, I’m going to post a few of the tracks in MP3 here at some point, so maybe leave a comment if you have a request for a specific song. Or not. Also, some dude has very cool pictures of said NYE show, including shots of the Susan Tedeschi Band and what appears to be the coolest setlist ever (??).

In the meantime here’s the Derek Trucks Bands’ take on a Son House (the father of delta blues, fact and best-of album title) classic -

It’s that time.. Lets Go Get Stoned | MP3s

I had the amazing fortune of attending this concert. During the break between the opening act (Mofro) and Derek Trucks, a third of the audience went for a “walk” around the block. Each person would nervously look around (getting caught in PA is no joke) and then lighters would flicker and clouds of smoke would appear..

10 Cover Songs by bands playing this NYE | MP3s

Happy New Year! @ Madison Square Gardens 2005

Well it’s getting close to that time of the year again - and I’m not talking about Christmas or Hanukkah. That’s right, it’s closing in on New Years Eve - a night that’s both frustrating and fun for concert goers. And the frustrations I refer to aren’t the huge lines, the drunks, or the hugely overpriced hotel rooms. I’m talking about the decision we all have to make in terms of which band(s) to go see. Last year I did The Black Crowes @ Madison Square Gardens. This year, I’ve already decided on a Mule Years Eve. What are your plans?

As a shout-out to two of my favorite music blogs*, (and maybe to help you decide which show to go to) here are ten cover songs by bands that are playing this New Years eve.

  1. Umphrey’s McGee - …And Justice for All | source | (UM is playing The Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, IL on NYE)
