Umphrey’s McGee - House of Blues, San Diego, CA - 6/14/07 | MP3s

While you’re reading/listening to this (assuming you’re reading it sometime around the time/date it was posted) I’m out painting fences. Wanna trade places? I shouldn’t complain - I can listen to music, get some exercise and work in the sun. That’s not too bad, right? Note to self: wear sunscreen.

From their recent show in San Diego, please enjoy the following tracks -

Mule Monday: Mountain Jam 2007

One single screenshot/image can sum up how I spent the past weekend:

I don’t even want to try and figure out how many hours I spent sitting in front of my laptop, dreaming of being @ Mountain Jam. But I will say this (and repeat it a few times) - the webcast was absolutely genius. More on that later…

Gov’t Mule - Night I

Where to begin. How about with the opener - Radiohead’s “Creep”. What a way to start the show.. Next up was a retardedly good version of 32/20 Blues, and it just kept getting better. I swear the Set I closer, Blind Man In The Dark, was the best version of that song I’ve heard all year. This show is a must-buy MuleTracks purchase.

Gov’t Mule - Night II

I really didn’t believe that they would be able to top the first night. Boy was I wrong. A couple of folks commented on the lack of sit-ins on the first night. Well Warren and the boys sure made up for that on the second night. Michael Franti joined them for Play With Fire, Jake Cinninger (Umphrey’s McGee) joined them on That’s What Love Will Make You Do, Ulises Bella and Asdru Sierra (Ozomatli) joined them on It’s A Man’s World and finally Josh Clark (Tea Leaf Green) joined them on Rockin’ In The Free World. This show isn’t a must-buy, it’s an absolutely-must-or-you’ll-regret-it-buy (MuleTracks)

New Orleans Social Club

For those not in-the-know, the New Orleans Social Club is a veritable who’s who of old-school New Orleans musicians. This time the lineup included George Porter Jr., Leo Nocentelli, Henry Butler, Ivan Neville and Raymond Weber.

Final thoughts

All of the MP3s in this post came from flacs converted to mp3, via etree. I would strongly encourage you to download the flac sources so that you’ll have a lossless copy. I’ve been keeping track of the Mountain Jam torrents on this post - so check it out. Also - show your support of a band who I repeatedly refer to as the most fan-friendly group of musicians of our time by purchasing these shows from MuleTracks. AND… the next time you see a Mule-taper, offer to buy them a beer. It’s really the least you can do…

Remote Digital Media was one of the groups involved in bringing this webcast to your computer. They did such a fantastic job that I felt obligated to send them all emails telling them as much. If I was ever put in the position of organizing some kind of live-web-event, Remote Digital Media would be my first phone call.

It wasn’t enough that Gov’t Mule gave us an inside look at creating their latest album, High & Mighty (via the In the Studio blog) - they’ve now taken it to the next level. A frequently updated Mountain Jam blog in addition to a free live webcast of the entire weekend. How many other bands put this kind of effort into their shows? Not very many come to mind. I don’t care how many old ladies I have to rob, how many banks I have to hold up (joke!) - I will be at next years Mountain Jam. See you there!

Umphrey’s McGee - Glory (11/3/2006) | Video

As Justin from the Live Music Blog points out, Umphrey’s McGee now have their own YouTube channel. Fuckin’ A. The majority of the videos (right now) come from shows at The Barrymore Theater in Madison WI (11/3/06) and Langerado festival (3/11/2006).

10 Cover Songs by bands playing this NYE | MP3s

Happy New Year! @ Madison Square Gardens 2005

Well it’s getting close to that time of the year again - and I’m not talking about Christmas or Hanukkah. That’s right, it’s closing in on New Years Eve - a night that’s both frustrating and fun for concert goers. And the frustrations I refer to aren’t the huge lines, the drunks, or the hugely overpriced hotel rooms. I’m talking about the decision we all have to make in terms of which band(s) to go see. Last year I did The Black Crowes @ Madison Square Gardens. This year, I’ve already decided on a Mule Years Eve. What are your plans?

As a shout-out to two of my favorite music blogs*, (and maybe to help you decide which show to go to) here are ten cover songs by bands that are playing this New Years eve.

  1. Umphrey’s McGee - …And Justice for All | source | (UM is playing The Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, IL on NYE)
  2. Gov’t Mule - Goin’ Out West | source | (Gov’t Mule is playing The Beacon Theatre in NYC, NY on NYE - see you there!)
  3. The Derek Trucks Band - The Weight | source | (tDTB is playing The Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA on NYE)
  4. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals - Skinny Woman | source | (Grace Potter is playing the Higher Ground in Burlington, VT on NYE)
  5. Rose Hill Drive - Dazed and Confused | source | (Rose Hill Drive are playing the Boulder Theater in Boulder, CO on NYE)
  6. Robert Randolph - Purple Haze | source | (Robert Randolph is playing the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ on NYE)
  7. moe. - Day Tripper | source | (moe. is playing Radio City Music Hall in NYC, NY on NYE)
  8. Galactic (with ALO) - Yes We Can | source | (Galactic is playing Tipitina’s Uptown in New Orleans, LA on NYE)
  9. Trey Anastasio - Foxy Lady | source | (Trey is playing the House of Blues in Atlantic City, NJ on NYE)
  10. Tea Leaf Green - I’ve Got A Feeling | source | (TLG is playing the Theatre of Living Arts in Philly, PA on NYE)
  11. The Black Keys - Have Love, Will Travel | source | (The Black Keys have yet to announce NYE plans, so this doesn’t count as one of the 10)

*LMB frequently does tour date info, Here comes the flood features great cover songs.
