NOW Magazine’s Best Bass Player: Nick Sewell

Nick Sewell

From this “best of Toronto” article -

Best bassist
NICK SEWELL

While many know him as the thunderous low end from defunct power trio Illuminati, Sewell now lurks with high-octane punk ‘n’ roll waste cases Drunkula. Check his collection of obscure vintage axes and the way he can rip hot bass fills without a pick. Obviously a graduate of the Lemmy Kilmister School of Bloody Fingers.

Way to go sunshine, you deserve it!

What’s worse?

The Eagles releasing their album with a Walmart campaign or the Sex Pistols performance on Leno? Sid is rolling in his grave right now.

Regina Spektor - Live @ The Hammerstein Ballroom 10/16/07

Stop what you’re doing and go download this. If you need help playing .flac files, converting them to MP3 or burning them as an audio CDs, see this guide (it has step-by-step instructions for Windows and OS X users, and all of the software involved is free).

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals - Live @ All Good

Since moving from Philly to Vancouver, I haven’t seen Grace Potter & The Nocturnals play live. In Philly I managed to see them open for The North Mississippi Allstars, Assembly of Dust and moe., plus two headlining shows. All in the space of a year. There really were some benefits to living on the east coast..

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals - Treat Me Right (7/14/07)
Grace Potter & The Nocturnals - Stop The Bus (7/14/07)

At least I’ll be seeing them 2 or 3 times in November.

Mule Monday: So what if it’s Sunday

I just feel like posting some music. So. I’m going to the Vancouver and Portland Gov’t Mule shows for sure, and maybe just maybe Seattle. In keeping with the ‘what the hell’ format of this post, here are some songs that I’d love to hear at one of those shows:

Gov’t Mule - Worried Down With The Blues (10/21/01)
Gov’t Mule - Indifference (10/21/01)
Gov’t Mule - Ohio (w/ Marc Ford)

Though it’s certainly worth noting - I really don’t care what they play. I don’t get my hopes up for this song or that one, and I always have a great time. I’ve said it a million times before and I’ll say it a million more, Gov’t Mule is the best band playing live now.

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals - Ain’t No Time | Video

Filmed live @ the 8×10 in Baltimore, MD - here’s the latest Grace Potter and the Nocturnals video - Ain’t No Time -

ps. there’s a great high quality version of the video that you can run in full-screen.

pss. the band is currently out on tour supporting Gov’t Mule - be sure to arrive in time to catch them - I promise you’ll be floored.

My Morning Jacket - Anytime (Live @ ACL) | Video

I’ve been playing around with Quicktime - cutting videos into pieces, exporting to different formats but still decent quality etc. Here’s one of the results.

Yeah the video was taken down by YouTube. Silly copyright infringement nonsense.

The Black Crowes - Can’t You Hear Me Knocking | MP3

I would have enjoyed hearing this in person. It’s one of those Black Crowes covers that I’ve always loved. But I did get to hear them play Street Fightin’ Man on New Years eve, so I can’t complain much.

Live from Red Rocks, in Morrison, CO, on 9/9/07 -

Up and coming: Josh McKillop | MP3s

This is an up and coming artist that I’m quite pleased to introduce you to - my little brother, Josh McKillop.

Josh started his musical career playing drums in our basement. Our parents have always been supportive of our projects/interests, and by paying for lessons and allowing a teenager to bang away on a drum kit for hours at a time only proves it. Because trust me, there was nowhere in the house you could go to hide from that sound. At some point Josh decided he wanted to switch from drums to guitar, and our mum was all too happy to buy him his first guitar - and Josh hasn’t looked back since. Now where he gets this musical talent is still an open question - I can’t hold a note, keep a beat, or play a single note - on any instrument. Yet Josh managed to record the following songs (see below) by playing every instrument, recording the vocals, and tracking it all together.

Josh McKillop - Twin Sisters
Josh McKillop - Giftcard

Head over to Josh’s MySpace for more tracks, including the song he wrote for his girlfriends birthday - “Dana’s Birthday Song”.

In the “damnit that sucks” news: Staggered Crossing to break up - will play one last show | MP3s

I’ve been meaning to write about Staggered Crossing for quite some time now and never got around to it. They’re a Canadian band that I’ve been listening to for years now, but have never seen live. And as it turns out, I probably won’t, ever. I say probably because the note on the band’s website states that they’re on “hiatus indefinitely”, rather than call it a permanent breakup. I guess only time will tell. They will be playing one last show, at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto. I listen to their self-titled album in iTunes almost weekly, and I always have a couple of StagX tracks on my MP3 player. Ah well…
